Bunk Beds And A Memory

Back in the seventies, I was just a little kid, but one of my fondest memories was going to visit my grandparents on my mother’s side. It was a six hour trip by car, so whenever we visited, we always stayed overnight. Back then, it was just me and my sister, my mom and my dad. Although the food and attention we received from our grandparents was great, one of the things I remembered and loved the most was being able to sleep in the bunk beds that they had waiting for us in one of the spare bedrooms.

Both me and my sister loved those beds, taking turns sleeping on top each time we visited. Weeks before we were scheduled to go, we always knew who was going to be sleeping where, and who’s turn it was last time. The waiting used to drive us crazy. One of my favorite things was climbing that ladder up and down to the top bed. We would also take all the blankets in the room and make a fort out of the bottom bunk.

I thought these were unique bunk beds because they were so sturdy, made out of this thick wood and painted white. I had never seen white bunk beds before which is one of the reasons I remember them so clearly.

As we got older, my sister became more interested in teenage stuff, and didn’t go with us as often anymore. I was lonely being there by myself, having the top bunk all to myself. It just wasn’t the same there with just me and my parents. I would continue to build a fort out of the bottom bunk, but I quickly became bored and would watch TV or find something else to do.

While I was away at college one night laying in an inexpensive bunk bed myself, I received news that my grandfather had passed. I was really saddened over this news because those trips we went on we so fun and so rich with memories. I already miss all the time we spent together.
